The Last of Us continues to prove that it can achieve wide appeal, beating House of the Dragon on the streaming charts. This comes as we get a clearer image of how the first two episodes performed on HBO Max, revealing that they have been viewed for a total of 837 million minutes.
During its own premiere, HBO's other smash hit, House of the Dragon, accumulated 741 million minutes of watch time. This is an incredible achievement for The Last of Us, as it proves that a video game adaptation can join the leagues of prestige television in terms of viewership, giving one of HBO's biggest franchises a run for its money.

This news comes courtesy of the Nielson charts, which have revealed viewing figures for the week of January 16 to 22. By this point, the first two episodes of The Last of Us were available to stream on HBO Max.
Interestingly, these stats would suggest that many fans got into The Last of Us after its premiere, rather than opting to watch it live from the start. Earlier figures pointed to House of the Dragon surpassing The Last of Us' viewership, but it seems that the Naughty Dog adaptation is only growing in popularity as it goes on.
These stats are also enough to put The Last of us ahead of other huge shows such as Netflix's Wednesday, despite eight episodes being available to watch during this timeframe.
While it remains to be seen if this momentum can be sustained until the first season finale, it's certainly not struggling with this in terms of its critical reception.
