HBO series has had multiple casting announcements and occasional official and unofficial stills, but nothing in the way of actual footage. And this is likely because the show is pretty far off, as HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys stated that the series probably won’t premiere until 2023.
According to Deadline, Bloys stated that he “imagine[s]” that we won’t see it until 2023, elaborating that it won’t premiere this year because the team is still shooting up in Canada. However, he said the early episodes he had seen are “amazing.”
“I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited,” he said. “Craig did for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing, so I’m excited for it, but it will not be in ’22.”
The vague 2023 release window seems far away and may call into question the release date of the projects developer Naughty Dog is allegedly making. The studio is reportedly developing a remake of the first game and a multiplayer title within the series, both of which could theoretically be tied to the HBO series. After all, Sony recently released a bundle with the last two games just before the Tom Holland-led film. Sony is also apparently making a game that is likely being positioned to coincide with the upcoming series set in the franchise.
Since neither Naughty Dog title has been officially announced, it’s difficult to deduce exactly when they are coming out. However, given Sony’s synergistic tendencies, those projects might also be a little further off, too.
