The Infinity Stones are among the most powerful items in the Marvel Universe, but in order to destroy them in the MCU, a weakness needed to be invented to make them disappear once they'd played their part. After snapping half of all life from existence, Thanos famously destroyed the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame. However, this was proved not to be possible in the comics, as Reed Richards was unable to destroy the gems with their own power.
In Avengers: Endgame, Earth's Mightiest Heroes learn that after using the Infinity Stones and Infinity Gauntlet to snap away half of all life in the universe, Thanos has destroyed them. The reveal that the gems have been destroyed leads the heroes to go their separate ways before later traveling through time to find the Infinity Stones and bring back those who were snapped. While the Avengers quest is successful, as they retrieve the gems from different points in time, it was still shocking for comic fans to see their version of the Infinity Stones destroyed by the Mad Titan, since the Infinity Stones are explicitly immune to this in the comics.

In New Avengers: Illuminati #2 (by Brian Michael Bendis, Brian Reed, Jim Cheung, Mark Morales, Justin Ponsor, and Cory Petit), Reed Richards and the Illuminati have tracked down all of the Infinity Stones. Richards immediately attempts to destroy the powerful gems and Infinity Gauntlet with the Infinity Stones but cannot do it.
