Hulu’s The Hardy Boys is proving to be an engaging and fun adaptation of the book series, but the show’s success is in danger of being weakened by the plot's obsession with magic. The original book series first debuted in 1927 and follows teen brothers Frank and Joe as they solve mysteries, mostly in their hometown of Bridgeport. Much like their popular counterpart, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys have been featured in many adaptations, and Hulu’s version doesn’t disappoint. However, an overload of magic in the second season has become distracting and needs to be fixed if the third season is to preserve the show’s alignment with the source material.
The Hardy Boys stars Rohan Campbell and Alexander Elliot as Frank and Joe Hardy as they relocate to Bridgeport after the mysterious death of their mother. As the boys investigate the possible murder, they unravel their family’s connection with a mysterious and historic secret society that aims to control world events using a magical relic called The Eye. With their new friends and impressive mystery-solving skills, the mystery-solving brothers' origin story shows them connecting the dots to catch the bad guys. However, in the final moments of the showdown, the show doubles down on the supernatural element. Consequently, the magical relic plays an even greater role than the boys’ sleuthing in season 2, as The Eye accumulates more and more importance to the story.
