Samsung's Galaxy S23 and S22 FE might ship with MediaTek processors, a first for these flagship smartphones. MediaTek is a fabless semiconductor company that began making systems-on-a-chip (SoC) in 2003 and supplies mobile chips to a variety of smartphone manufacturers. While its Helio and early series of processors were not powerful enough for flagships, the Dimensity line is competitive with Qualcomm's Snapdragon and Samsung's Exynos.
Samsung takes a somewhat unique position with its Galaxy smartphones, featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon processors for flagship models that ship to North America, while smartphones that ship elsewhere use its own Exynos chips. In recent years, customers have complained about a performance gap between the two varieties and, in some cases, photos and videos even appear differently. Qualcomm usually gets the better end of those comparisons.

According to Business Korea, Samsung is considering using MediaTek processors in the Galaxy S22 FE and the Galaxy S23. This wouldn't be the first time Samsung made use of MediaTek chips, but these low-cost alternatives have typically been used in its budget models, never in a flagship. The recent advances that MediaTek has made with its Dimensity 9000 processor, have caught the attention of several manufacturers and perhaps Samsung is taking note as well. Meanwhile, Samsung's own Exynos continues to struggle, with even the latest Exynos 2200 falling behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in graphics performance.
