Although Darlene’s concerns about Mark were well placed on The Conners, her objections to his season 4 scheme and their ensuing fight felt both out-of-character and nonsensical. Darlene has never been the most consistent character on The Conners. She blows hot and cold and can often change her mind without much warning, as evidenced by Ben and Darlene’s tumultuous relationship during The Conners.
However, Darlene is also smart and cares about the welfare of her children, two characteristics that she has maintained throughout four seasons of The Conners. As such, it was a surprise to see her fight with her ambitious son Mark over nothing in particular during one The Conners season 4 outing. The issue occurred when Mark revealed that he was writing college admission essays for his wealthy former private school classmates.

Darlene complains that Mark ghostwriting college essays for his rich former classmates is unethical, as it allows the rich kids an easier path into college. However, as Mark notes, it also allows him to afford access to college, isn’t illegal, and arguably isn’t giving the kids much of a leg up. Mark’s season 4 story onThe Connerssaw him resort to abusing ADHD medication to keep up his GPA and gain access to college. In contrast, even without an impressive admission essay, it is not unreasonable to presume that his affluent former schoolmates won’t have much trouble getting into the college of their choice.
