Marg Helgenberger has become the latest original series star to join the cast of CSI: Vegas season 2, according to reports. After first shooting to fame with the lead role in the soap opera Ryan's Hope (1982-86), Helgenberger went on to enjoy a prolific TV career, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award. In 2000, the Nebraska native took the role of Catherine Willows in the forensic crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the original CSI series, and would portray the character for 12 years across 264 episodes. Willows is a single mother and crime scene investigator who was a prominent part of the CSI team until she takes a job at the FBI.
Helgenberger and Willows returned for a guest appearance in the CSI season 14 episode «Frame By Frame», and also for the feature length season 15 and series finale episode, «Immortality». There have been several CSI spin-off shows over the years, including CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, and CSI: Cyber. The most recent, CSI: Vegas, is a spin-off of the original series, which also takes place in Las Vegas, and the first season saw the return of legacy characters Gil Grissom and Sarah Sidle. Originally meant as a limited series, CSI: Vegas was renewed for a season 2 in December 2021, but it's since been revealed that William Petersen will not return as Gil Grissom.

However, fans were met with good news when it was revealed that Helgenberger would return to the franchise for the second season, following a seven year absence.
