The Batman will see Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight lose control of Gotham City, according to a recent interview with the star. The eagerly anticipated Batman reimagining is due to hit theaters on March 4, and already footage has hinted at a much darker and more gritty portrayal than previous iterations of the character. Twilight star Pattinson was eventually cast as the Great Detective after Ben Affleck left the role back in 2017. The British actor, who is reportedly a huge Batman fan, has admitted he obsessed over The Batman role for a year before finally winning the part.
Taking place during Bruce Wayne's second year fighting crime as his alter ego in Gotham City, The Batman presents a jaded and troubled character still finding his place in the world, and still learning to deal with his role as a crime fighter. The film's plot will focus on Batman's battle with a serial killer known as The Riddler (Paul Dano), but will also feature classic villains Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and Penguin (Colin Farrell). Consciously making an effort not to be an origin story, The Batman will introduce audiences to an inexperienced and slightly naive titular character, who is just starting out as a crime fighting vigilante, with little idea of the horrors he will encounter. This interesting take on Batman's story fits well with the darker narrative direction that director Matt Reeves has previously teased.
