The Batman actor Colin Farrell has revealed that his son was horrified the first time he saw the actor in his Penguin make-up. The Batman, which is to be released on March 4, is the latest iteration of the classic DC character, and will also be the first depiction of Batman outside of the DCEU since Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Along with the new take on Batman as portrayed by Robert Pattinson, The Batman will feature new interpretations of many classic villains from the Batman comics. These include Paul Dano as The Riddler, John Turturro as Mob boss Carmine Falcone, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, and, of course, Farrell as the Penguin.
The Penguin, or Oswald Cobblepot, is a character who has been reimagined several times for live-acton adaptation. Typically, the character is portrayed as somewhat deformed, causing him to look a bit like a penguin. Over the years, the Penguin's look has varied in intensity between each actor who has taken on the role. The least intense look comes from Robin Lord Taylor's portrayal of Cobblepot in the series Gotham, which required little to no makeup, while the most intense look so far would most likely be Danny DeVito's take on the character in 1992's Batman Returns, which required both prosthetic makeup and a full bodysuit. For Farrell's Penguin interpretation, director Matt Reeves decided to go a similar route to DeVito's look, though this new version looks more realistic and less like it was directly inspired by a penguin. According to Farrell, the look consists of face makeup, fake teeth, a wig, and a bodysuit, all of which took between six and eight hours to apply the first time he tried it all on.
