During his dark and misguided conquest in the MCU's Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos made it clear what his motivations were behind collecting the Infinity Stones and what he intended to do with them once he achieved his quest–though upon further investigation into the inner workings of the Mad Titan’s mind by none other than Ghost Rider, it is revealed that Thanos’ Infinity War plan was a lie.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos is hunting down the Infinity Stones so he can erase half of all life in the universe. He claims that he is only doing so because the universe is overpopulated and will soon run out of resources. In his mind, eliminating half of all life is the rational thing to do. Since he wields incredible strength and willpower, Thanos believes himself to be the only one strong enough to carry out this ‘necessary’ task. Basically, Thanos is saying that he was called to carry out this mission because he believes it has to be done, maintaining that he derives no pleasure from the mass genocide. Whilefans have debated how much Thanos' plan makes sense, he claims he had good intentions.
