In the Marvel Universe, Ghost Rider is known as the Spirit of Vengeance. But it appears his other half, Johnny Blaze, might be getting in the way of that.
Several different characters have taken the mantle of Ghost Rider over the years, but the most well-known is that of stuntman Johnny Blaze. His origins have shifted over time, but the basic idea is that he made a deal with the Devo; in order to save someone's life. Unfortunately, this deal required him to be bonded with an entity known as the Ghost Rider. His job is to hunt down those who have hurt the innocent, punishing them in the name of vengeance with his signature Penance Stare attack.

Similar to the Hulk, Ghost Rider and Johnny Blaze are considered two entities that act independently of one another. Johnny Blaze blacks out when the Ghost Rider takes control, but that hasn't stopped Johnny from getting wrapped up in the Ghost Rider's world. For the most part, Johnny has been thrust into a world of danger, often having to step up and save innocents like he did in Ghost Rider #3 by Benjamin Percy, Cory Smith and Brent Peeples. When a young boy was in the way of getting hit by a truck, Johnny Blaze sprung into action and tackled the boy out of the way.
Although he does save innocents from time to time, Ghost Rider is less concerned with protection than punishment. He is the Spirit of Vengeance and uses his Penance Stare to make the guilty relive all of the pain they caused.
