Magnum P.I. may be getting a potential fifth season on NBC and USA Network. Developed by Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, it serves as a reboot of the popular 1980s television series of the same name, following former Navy SEAL, Thomas Magnum, who upon returning from Afghanistan, uses his skills to become a private investigator in Hawaii. The show stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Amy Hill, and Tim Kang. It premiered in 2018 on CBS and became a relative hit, even after the network fired Lenkov ahead of its third season. Although the series maintained strong ratings over four years, it was announced on May 12, 2022, that it would be canceled due to the complex negotiations between CBS Studios and co-producing company Universal Television.
Now, according to Deadline, Universal Television has begun looking at new homes for a potential renewal of Magnum P.I. While Paramount+ has been considered, the report claims USA and NBC are in conversations to make Magnum P.I. season 5. There have not been negotiations between NBCUniversal and Paramount Global and it is also being noted that the series has to sort out the SVOD library rights.

This would not be the first time a Universal Television property saved a fan-favorite series, with NBC picking up Brooklyn 99 following its cancellation by Fox back in 2018. While news of the show's sudden ending might have left fans upset, it is looking like its return could happen. Depending on whether a new deal with CBS Studios can be made, it should be interesting to see where Magnum P.I. goes next.
