NASA has revealed that the Earth had a very close encounter with as many as 4 asteroids and horrifyingly, 1 asteroid actually crashed into the planet. Yes, Earth just had a narrow escape yesterday after 3 dangerous asteroids flew past our planet. However, the fourth one actually hit the Earth! An asteroid actually crashed into the Earth on March 11. The asteroid was earlier scheduled to fly past Earth with an extremely narrow distance of just 2,890 kilometers, but it turns out that due the gravitational pull of the Earth, it changed its course and started heading for Earth. The asteroid made an impact in Greenland and thankfully, did not cause any casualties. The moment, however, served a purpose of reminding us that these shooting stars in the sky can actually pose a genuine threat of massive destruction if they veer away from from their paths and head for Earth at the last moment.
The four asteroids were observed by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in which the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) works. Together, the organization observes thousands of asteroids continuously and assess their threat level in real-time. For March 11, the threat level was minimal for the three out of 4 asteroids. The fourth asteroid, named 2022 EB5, was at a high risk of impact with such a small distance separating it from Earth.
According to NASA, among the 4 asteroids was a giant one too. It measured around 910 feet and the asteroid was called 2015 DR215. If it had made its way towards the Earth, it could have resulted in massive destruction. But thankfully the larger asteroids were also placed at a greater distance. This one made a safe passage from a distance of 6,700,000 kilometers. The other two named 2022 EV1 and 2009 DV43
