Dune director Denis Villeneuve has recently revealed that he would be interested in directing a dark comedy written by writer-director Adam McKay. When one thinks of Villeneuve, the word «comedy» is not one that automatically jumps to mind. Villeneuve is one of the most respected directors working in the industry today and has cemented his place in Hollywood with films such as Prisoners, Arrival, Blade Runner: 2049, and, of course, Dune. His films often combine a grand cinematic scale with dark and thoughtful storylines. McKay, on the other hand, makes films that, while they often have dark and thoughtful tones themselves, audiences find themselves laughing uproariously through. MacKay's latest film, Don't Look Up, tells the tale of a group of scientists who desperately try and alert an uninterested world of an impending comet strike that will eliminate all life, and is nominated for the Best Picture Oscar alongside Villeneuve's Dune.

In a recent interview with Variety, Villeneuve has admitted that he has secretly wanted McKay to write a dark comedy for him to direct for quite some time. This is a surprise coming from a man who specializes in dark and broody material. However, Villeneuve stated that he would love to «turn and do something totally different.» Villeneuve even admitted that if it came to it, he would also be interested in directing an adaptation of the French-Canadian cyber-punk rock opera Starmania.
It is currently unclear if McKay is aware of Villeneuve's collaborative aspirations, however, it's likely that the two visionary minds working together could create something very special. Perhaps the two will be able to discuss the idea
