NFTs suck. They require way more energy to maintain than a card collection or a piece of art you hang from your wall, they don’t add anything to video games, and they’re often just outright scams. Which is why everyone is dunking on indie publisher Team17 following its MetaWorms announcement.
MetaWorms is a new NFT project that will turn the lovable Worms franchise into NFTs. Just like all those stupid ape jpegs, each NFT will be computer-generated with minor variations. As you’d expect, the response to the Worms NFT announcement has been universally and resoundingly negative. Just scroll through the replies on this entirely unrelated Twitter post from Team17 to see what I mean.

We believe NFTs cannot be environmentally friendly, or useful, and really just an overall fucking grift," wrote Aggro Crab. "Needless to say, we will not be working with them on further titles, and encourage other indie developers to do the same unless this decision is reversed."
Ghost Town Games, makers of the popular Overcooked franchise, also took to social media to distance themselves from Team17's NFT announcement. We think they carry too great an environmental and social cost."
