PC VR players feeling left out after seeing some of the high-profile releases on Sony’s PS VR2 in recent weeks now have some good news headed their way, as developer Combat Waffle Studios announces that their extraction-based shooter Ghosts of Tabor has begun open alpha testing. Heavily inspired by DayZ and survival shooter Escape from Tarkov, the VR-exclusive game features PVE and PVP battles set across multiple different scenarios.
Popularized by games like 2017’s Escape from Tarkov, extraction-based shooters combine the slow, methodical pacing of tactical first-person shooters with gameplay mechanics more often seen in survival games. Rather than winning rounds by dominating multiplayer scoreboards with the highest kill-to-death ratio, extraction-based shooters typically task players with scavenging, looting, and crafting weapons and equipment to survive against human or AI opponents. Activision incorporated many elements of the popular, hardcore-focused genre into Call of Duty: Warzone 2’s DMZ mode when it released late last year, with the new mode earning rave reviews from many players.

In a short video posted to Twitter by developer Combat Waffle Studios, it was announced that Ghosts of Tabor has officially entered open alpha testing on PC. Available to Steam users who request access from the game’s store page, the Ghosts of Tabor alpha test gives interested players the chance to try out the VR title’s take on the crafting, looting, and survival mechanics that have become a staple of the extraction-based shooter genre.
