Throughout his career as a hero in DC Comics, Superman has taken a stand against intergalactic warlords, chaos deities, and villains galore, but even he might not be able to overcome his most surprising adversary yet. In One Star Squadron #3 from Mark Russell, Steve Lieber, Dave Stewart, and Dave Sharpe, Superman finds himself face to face with none other than…a board of directors trying to commodify heroism. The Man of Steel is no stranger to battling systemic issues, but as seen in Superman: Peace on Earth from Paul Dini and Alex Ross, where Superman tries and fails to stop world hunger, some plights may just be too difficult for one man to handle.
In One Star Squadron #3, a group of businessmen have created a new app called “HEROZ4U” which allows heroes to be notified of nearby developments or situations where they might be needed. Superman, however, opposes this idea completely and disavows the commodification of heroism. His stance is that the cheapening of heroic acts will lead to dire consequences for any heroes, especially now since their livelihoods are on the line if they cannot perform for the app.

The board of directors try to convince Superman that their app is simply the way things are going to be done in the future since every facet of life is becoming increasingly more commodified and heroes are no different. Superman disagrees, however, and states that the entire reason people become heroes «is because they can't accept the world as it is.» This is followed by a swift exit as he claims the Justice League will officially pull its support from the app soon after.
