If you’ve been dying for news about the fourth season of Stranger Things, the wait is finally over, and there’s not long to go before the show is back on Netflix.
In an open letter to fans, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer say the series will return to the video-streaming service on May 27, 2022. Given the season's "unprecedented length," season four will be broken into two volumes, according to the brothers. Look for Volume 2 on July 1.
Seasons one and three had eight episodes each, season two had nine, so are we looking at a dozen or more for season four? That's unclear, but the Duffer brothers said the season will have "a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season."
Season four begins six months after the battle at Starcourt Mall in season three, with the young friends now in high school and facing both separation from one another as well as a new supernatural threat, Netflix explains. Promotional assets suggest the plot will extend well beyond Hawkins, Indiana, as well, with locations in California and Russia coming into play.
The extensive fourth season isn’t all Stranger Things fans will have to look forward to: The Duffer brothers note that season four is series penultimate season, so season five is on the horizon.
