Star Wars: Squadrons is free to play this weekend on Steam. Dip your toe into the best Star Wars fighter game ever made, play as much as you can, and then buy it for a significant discount.
Although well-reviewed upon its initial release back in October of 2020, Star Wars: Squadrons has struggled to retain players. A year after peaking at 35,000 players the game had fallen to a mere fraction of that number. The recent sale and free-to-play weekend have almost doubled Star Wars: Squadron’s low point of 351 players last year, although the lack of new content since last May significantly hampers this game’s future outlook.

Squadrons comes with three game modes: Story, Dogfights, and Fleet Battles. Story mode provides a roughly 15-hour campaign that takes place soon after the events of Return of the Jedi. The Empire is attempting to regain its footing after the stunning defeat at the Battle of Endor, while the Rebel Alliance is busy building battleships from the remains of Imperial Star Destroyers.
You'll play both sides of the conflict, taking part in both Rebel and Imperial operations in a variety of starfighters. Rebel pilots can try out A-wings, Y-Wings, X-wings, B-wings, or U-wings, while the Empire gets the usual assortment of TIE Fighter variants. When the campaign is over, take to Dogfights or Fleet Battles in 5v5 multiplayer combat.
We gave Star Wars: Squadrons four out of five in our review, praising the game's action and immersive experience with VR support, but were a bit critical of the multiplayer game modes and short campaign. You’ll be able to make a good dent on the campaign if you get started today, and the 70% discount you’ll get thanks to the Steam Lunar Sale puts
