Important news for all Minecraft Java Edition players. On February 4, Minecraft announced its last call to all Java Edition players who have not yet switched to Microsoft accounts. The company stated that the voluntary account migration period to get a Microsoft account was going to end on March 10, 2022 and players will not be able to play the game unless they created a Microsoft account. So far, Java Edition players could play the game simply by using a Mojang account. Minecraft first came out with the decision to transition all its players from Mojang to Microsoft in October 2020. It had given a year’s time to players to voluntarily migrate the account. But yesterday, the company finally pushed the deadline and insisted that all its players migrate by the suggested timeline or they will not be able to play Minecraft anymore.

Minecraft has two versions at present. One is the classic Java Edition that came out in 2009 and the multi-platform version Bedrock came out in 2016. Bedrock was mainly aimed at consoles and smartphones. Right now, the division is such that any device outside of a desktop computer can only run Bedrock. Even in PCs, only Windows can run both Bedrock and Java while Linux and Mac can only run Java. The older Java Edition ran on Mojang accounts whereas the newer Bedrock Edition ran on Microsoft accounts.

In its blogpost, Minecraft explained the reason behind the call for account migration. “We’re doing this to ensure that everyone is playing using accounts with improved security and player safety,” read the post. According to the company, Microsoft accounts offer two-factor authentication and improved player safety which is lacking in the Mojang accounts.
