Pandemic Studios' classic games are beloved within the fanbase, and so when it was announced that Aspyr would be bringing them to modern platforms in the to celebrate the titles' 20th anniversary, many fans were excited to jump back in. Unfortunately, the launch has been disastrous, resulting in massive fan backlash.
Within a day of its launch, currently has an «Overwhelmingly Negative» review score on Steam, having worsened from the «Mostly Negative» rating it had at launch. This is far from what anyone was expecting, as the re-release seemed to have potential, boasting the return of popular modes such asHero Assault and Conquest, alongside the addition of several maps and characters such as Asajj Ventress and Kit Fisto that weren't included on all platforms upon the titles' original release, making for what should have been a complete experience for modern players.
Showing just how anticipated Aspyr's release was, over 10,000 players tried to access upon its launch night. Unfortunately, only three multiplayer servers were online at the time. Each server only allowed up to 64 players, coming to a total of just 192 spaces available. This number is extremely low in the modern gaming space where games like can have over 300,000 concurrent players trying to access the game on Steam alone and is something Aspyr should have anticipated before launch.
More official servers were added within an hour of 's launch, and Aspyr has since confirmed it is in the process of adding more to try and accommodate player demand. Unfortunately, many players have complained that they still experience severe lag and performance issues in multiplayer after this, with plenty more work needed to make for an optimal multiplayer experience.
Aspyr released a statement about these issues, confirming that at launch it experienced "" with its network infrastructure, resulting in "" The company reaffirmed that it has been "" and will continue to do so until its network infrastructure is stabilized.
