Demakes are all the rage these days. There’s someone making a Disco Elysium Demake for the Game Boy, someone else making Portal for the N64, and another modder demaking Elden Ring. Last week, The Stanley Parable received its Ultra Deluxe upgrade with a release on modern consoles, so naturally, there’s also a modder demaking the Stanley Parable in the original MS-DOS Quake engine.
Twitter user @JaycieErysdren is a 21-year-old game developer that specializes in the original Quake engine. Her latest project is to try to demake The Stanley Parable using the DOS Quake engine, which was decided by a user poll just a few days ago. A “1996-style demake” won out, and Jaycie is already hard at work getting Stanley to decide which door he wants to walk through.

“Stanley96,” as it’s being called, will feature the original 2011 mod textures and voice lines. Although, it seems like the Quake engine can’t handle high fidelity files and the beautifully narrated lines sound like they’re being played through 26-year-old laptop speakers. That just adds to the authenticity if you ask me.
It’s interesting to see Stanley Parable meander its way through so many game engines. The game first got started as a Half-Life 2 mod, then became its own standalone game in the Source Engine in 2013. Then just last week, the Ultra Deluxe edition arrived on PS4, Xbox One, and even the Nintendo Switch (as well as a new version for the PC). Now it’s heading back to an engine that even predates the Stanley Parable.
