Music streaming service Spotify embraced AI to offer subscribers a personal DJ and music recommendation experience.
From today, Spotify Premium subscribers in the US and Canada will find a DJ card added to their Music Feed in the Android and iOS apps. Tapping it will trigger the new AI DJ(Opens in a new window) to serve up a list of music recommendations based on what Spotify already knows you like.
Alongside the curated lineup of music, the DJ is equipped with a "stunningly realistic voice" to offer "commentary around the tracks and artists."
Spotify took advantage of OpenAI—the same technology used to develop ChatGPT—to create its AI DJ, which learned from the streaming service's music editors who were tasked with providing "insightful facts" on music, artists, and genres.
The realistic voice was made possible through Spotify's acquisition(Opens in a new window) of dynamic AI voice platform Sonantic last year. And if you're wondering who provided the voice, it's Xavier "X" Jernigan, Spotify's Head of Cultural Partnerships. He used to be one of the hosts of Spotify's The Get Up morning show.
Spotify intends to add more voice models to the DJ's speech options, and as with all artificial intelligence models, the more it's used, the more it will learn, and the better it should get at offering a personalized experience to millions of Spotify Premium subscribers.
