Splatoon 2 players had a surprisingly big role in determining the future of Splatoon 3, as the Final Fest: Splatocalypse Splatfest winning side chose how the series would proceed. Pearl and Marina, Splatoon 2's idols and newscasters, lead the fight between Chaos and Order, respectively.
Although more Splatfests were eventually released or re-released in the game, the Final Fest was initially intended to be the last Splatfest of the title, and it was a big deal as a result. Inklings and Octolings battled it out to determine which side would be the victor in Splatfest turf battles, dueling each other to see who could complete the round with the most turf inked in their team's respective color.

In the end, Chaos came out as the winner, and Splatoon 3 owes a big part of its design and direction to it. In a new interview with the developers of Splatoon 3, they revealed that fans were correct in their belief that the Splatfest would somehow influence the next game. The developers had no way of knowing which team would win, but were already thinking about how they could integrate either Order or Chaos into the theme of the next game.
Splatoon 3 is set in the «city of chaos» Splatsville, which the developers stated «is a city that rapidly developed with the arrival of the “Chaos” craze after the Splatfest.» It and the surrounding Splatlands are considerably further away from the areas of the first two games, but that hasn't stopped Inklings and Octolings from flooding into the city.
