Spider-Man: No Way Home's visual effects weren't finished until after its theatrical release, according to VFX Supervisor Scott Edelstein. Tom Holland's third solo movie starring as the web-slinging superhero alongside his love interest MJ (Zendaya), and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), debuted in theaters on December 17 and quickly began breaking box office records not only for the pandemic era, but of all-time. Its most recent major milestone was passing Avatar to become the third highest-grossing movie domestically.
Nearly every element of No Way Home has been praised by critics and audiences alike, particularly its success in bringing three generations of Spider-Man actors together on the big screen. The movie saw the return of past villains – namely Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Lizard (Rhys Ifans) – along with the feverishly-anticipated return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective versions of Spider-Man. However,No Way Home has one weak spot that fans were quick to point out – its questionable visual effects, specifically during the climactic battle sequence at the Statue of Liberty.
