SpaceX has decided to expand Starlink sales to the US retail market by making its satellite internet service available at Home Depot.
SpaceX previously sold Starlink exclusively to consumers on its official website. But that changed on Monday when Home Depot was spotted(Opens in a new window) selling the Starlink dish hardware for $599.
In addition, Starlink.com has been updated to include Home Depot as an authorized retailer for the satellite internet gear. Other authorized resellers are mainly dealers focused on select markets, such as boating, RVs, or enterprise buyers.
Home Depot sales could help SpaceX raise greater awareness among consumers about the satellite internet system, which beams high-speed broadband to rural and remote locations across the US. In addition, it gives consumers another way to quickly buy a spare Starlink dish, which only has a one-year warranty.
However, it looks like Starlink hardware sold out fast at Home Depot. The product page(Opens in a new window) currently lists the gear as “out of stock” at various locations, a day after the users first spotted the sales.
According to the same product page, the units up for sale at Home Depot can subscribe to either the Roam plan for Starlink or the basic residential tier, which is currently waitlisted in many areas across the eastern US.
As a result, Home Depot appears(Opens in a new window) to be blocking Starlink sales across 30 states, where Starlink residential is currently behind a waitlist. (In contrast, the Roam version can provide internet access immediately to the customer, but at a higher monthly cost.)
If you buy the hardware from Home Depot, you can activate(Opens in a new window) the hardware and start paying for a subscription
