Sony's latest entry with its own world of Marvel characters, Morbius, made $5.7 million in its Thursday box office previews. The Wrap reports that the Jared Leto-led horror vehicle will open in roughly 4,200 locations this weekend and is available on IMAX and PLF screens.
That figure for a PG-13 movie is just under the $5.9M that DC/Warner Bros.' Shazam made back in 2019. Shazam later went on to earn $53.5M for its opening weekend. While Sony is expecting $33M from the Daniel Espinosa-directed movie, box office trackers have it pacing it at about $40-50M.
Morbius is Sony's attempt to recapture some of that Venom magic they surprisingly caught back in 2018 and looks to continue with more feature films spotlighting Spider-Man anti-heroes Kraven the Hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Madame Web. Comparatively, Venom earned $10M on its opening night but went on to make $80M for its weekend.
The superhero horror movie has been saddled with several delays during the pandemic and was originally scheduled for a July 2020 release. Morbius is currently sitting at a 36, but with an 8.0 with audiences on Metacritic. For more on what to expect, check out GameSpot's Morbius review.
