The PlayStation 4 may be over eight years old at the time of writing, but the console has certainly left its mark on the gaming industry. Currently having sold over 117 million units and sitting as the fourth best-selling video game console of all time, the PS4 has seen the release of some incredibly successful games. Even modern titles like Horizon Forbidden West are still releasing on the PS4 as well as the PS5. However, Sony releasing the same game on two consoles may soon become a thing of the past.
This report comes from a recent financial presentation by Sony, which shows that the platform owner is planning the end of the PS4. It seems that despite availability still being a major problem for the PS5 due to scalpers and hardware shortages, Sony is still planning on making its newest console its primary gaming machine. It was made clear in the presentation that by 2025, the PlayStation 4 will no longer have newer titles released on the platform.

The PlayStation 5 has seen some exclusive games already, such as 2021's Returnal, and it seems that focusing on one platform may prove beneficial to a game, as Returnal won game of the year at this year's BAFTA awards. However, for fans who are still struggling to get their hands on a PS5, the end of new releases on the PlayStation 4 can prove to be a frustrating announcement, as it means newer titles will simply be unavailable to those gamers.
For now, however, PS4's legacy titles will still be purchasable and at the moment, it seems that Sony will not be ending the release of new games on the older console.
