Slime Rancher is an exercise in constant escalation. Players enter the classic farming game loop of gathering resources to upgrade their farm, which will give them more resources to further upgrade their farm.

Of course, even with the lab, players still need to gather ingredients and craft each gadget. For players who want to fully explore and exploit the map, finding slime fossils in Slime Rancher is a must.
The good news is, unlike Slime Rancher's Indigonium, slime fossils are not restricted to certain areas of the map. Players can plop a drill down and theoretically find them anywhere, and there doesn't seem to be specific areas where their drop rate improves.
The bad news is that they're an uncommon drill resource, so it still may take a while to find some. Thankfully, their chances of finding uncommon and rare drops increase as they upgrade their drill. The tier 4 titan drill is 5 times more likely to drop a slime fossil than the novice drill.
The functional purpose of the slime fossils isn't immediately clear. The majority of the recipes that require it are decorations and curios, which aren't exactly game-changing.
