Footage of an Unreal Engine 5 remake of Skyrim recently resurfaced and it looks gorgeous, but this shouldn't encourage Bethesda to develop another remaster. Released over a decade now, in 2011, Skyrim is one of the most iconic RPGs of all time and, thanks to its longstanding legacy (as well as a bevy of remasters and ports from publisher Bethesda), it seemingly refuses to die. The game has been released on three separate generations of consoles now, but with a glimpse of what the new generation can achieve from the ground up with Unreal Engine 5, it's time to stop re-releasing Skyrim, and for Elder Scrolls 6 to receive greater focus.
With its sprawling vistas and outstanding visuals for a game released two generations ago, it would be arguable whether Skyrim needed a remaster, let alone two. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — Special Edition was released in 2016, featuring the full game, as well as all three downloadable content packs (Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn) and a visual upgrade. Following this, in 2021, an Anniversary Edition was released for the newest generation — a celebration of 10 years of Skyrim, with slight new additions and access to more created content features.

Around the same time that the Anniversary Edition was released, Christian Gomm, an environmental artist who was familiar with Unreal Engine 5, gave Skyrim fans a glimpse into what a future Elder Scrolls game could look like.
