Samsung's collaboration with iFixit to allow Galaxy device owners to perform repairs has gone live in the US.
Under the agreement, iFixit offers repair guides and genuine Samsung parts(Opens in a new window) for the Galaxy S20 and S21 range, as well as the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus tablet. The types of repair owners can perform include replacing the USB-C charge port, replacing the back cover/glass, and switching out the screen and battery.
Prices range from $67 right up to $227 depending on the type of repair and which model you own. For example, replacing the charge port on your Galaxy phone is going to cost $66.99, where as a new screen and battery repair kit is $206.99. Keep in mind you aren't just getting the new parts and a guide, though. iFixit includes all the required tools to safely open your device as well (e.g. spudgers, tweezers, opening picks, precision bits).
Samsung says(Opens in a new window) the pricing matches that of its affiliate repair providers and parts can also be purchased through Samsung 837(Opens in a new window) and Samsung retail and service locations(Opens in a new window). More devices and more types of repair for those devices are promised in the future, which hopefully encourages consumers to keep their devices for longer.
For those who would rather not perform a self-repair, Samsung has over 11,000 certified mobile repair technicians in the US. The company also offers an in-person same day service, "we come to you" service, mail-in service, and a network on independent repair specialists(Opens in a new window). And soon you'll be able to put your Galaxy device into a "repair mode" to protect your personal data before giving it to a professional to repair.
