Sea of Thieves is reportedly a "key test" that will decide if Xbox brings more of its first-party games to other consoles.
Although 2023 might have been a very quiet year for Xbox, 2024 has already proven to have a lot more going on. Beyond all of the upcoming first-party releases like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Avowed, Xbox also made a big move by beginning to bring its first-party games to other consoles.
So far in 2024, we've had two Xbox games come to other consoles, Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush, with two more coming in the next few months. As great as it'll be to see Grounded on other consoles, undoubtedly the most exciting game to be coming to PlayStation is Sea of Thieves, which is something that fans have wanted to see for a long time now (something that Rare even poked fun of when announcing the port).
Sea of Thieves isn't just the stand-out Xbox game coming to PlayStation for fans, however. As reported by The Verge in a recent report about Xbox executive Kareem Choudhry leaving Microsoft, Xbox's plans for bringing exclusive games to PS5 are mentioned. Tom Warren reports that Xbox is continuing to "evaluate other Xbox-exclusive games coming to PS5", which lines up with Spencer's previous claims.
It seems that one of the deciding factors for more Xbox games coming to PlayStation is Sea of Thieves. According to The Verge's sources, Sea of Thieves is going to be a "key test for whether other games might make their way to PS5 or Nintendo Switch". It seems that how well Sea of Thieves does on PlayStation will influence more titles coming in the future.
Several Xbox games have been rumoured to be coming to PlayStation beyond the four that we know about, including Gears of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator , and even Starfield .
