David Arquette reveals his first reaction to reading Dewey's heartbreaking death scene in Scream. Earlier this year, audiences journeyed back to the town of Woodsboro for Scream as a new wave of terror tore through its residents. More than 25 years on from the release of Wes Craven's Scream, in which horror fans were first introduced to Neve Campbell's now-iconic final girl, the new film saw Sidney Prescott once again go head-to-head with Ghostface, a merciless killer with a particular affection for knives. The 1996 Scream also featured the debuts of Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and Arquette as Dewey Riley.
Scream 2022 was the fifth installment in the much-loved horror franchise and saw Campbell, Cox, and Arquette all return to reprise their legacy roles. The film also welcomed a whole host of fresh faces, including the likes of In The Heights' Melissa Barrera and The Boys' Jack Quaid. Given the nature of Scream, it was largely speculated in the run-up to the film's release that one of the three legacy characters would likely not make it to the credits, a prediction that proved to be accurate after Dewey was stabbed to death by Ghostface mid-way through the film, in a heart-wrenching moment of bravery and self-sacrifice. Now, Arquette has opened up about the very first time he read his character's tragic death scene.

In conversation with Empire, Arquette revealed that, prior to receiving the script, he had no idea that Scream would see Dewey meet such a grisly end.
