Several legacy characters return in Scream 2022, but the meta slasher’s script changes prove leaving Stu (Matthew Lillard) out was the right decision. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett had the difficult task of reviving a franchise more than a decade after the last installment. Wes Craven's passing suggested there would be no further sequels, but Scream 2022 successfully honors the past while taking the story in a compelling new direction.
Scream 2022 sees Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) return to her native Woodsboro after Ghostface attacks her younger sister, Tara (Jenna Ortega). Legacy heroes Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) return to help a new generation of potential victims. The movie contains numerous references to 1996’s Scream, with the murder spree once again connected to original killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich).

The fifth Scream movie effectively balances beloved heroes and engaging new characters. However, one element that was teased but never came to fruition was the possible return of Stu Macher, Billy's accomplice. Yet, changes to James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick's script prove Scream 2022 was right to exclude Stu. Sam’s mom is frequently mentioned yet never seen, but her distracting presence in the first draft illustrates the danger of including too many characters that would overcomplicate Scream 2022's story. Although Stu, unfortunately, doesn't appear, his house is once again the setting for a bloody climax.
