Actress Melissa Barrera reveals how a secret character returned for Scream 2022. Barrera plays Sam Carpenter, the new addition protagonist to the franchise series, who has a haunting family history that ties all the way back to the first Scream film, which is revealed early on in the film. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Scream 2022 brings back a number of legacy stars from the series, including the lead, Neve Campbell, as well as Courteney Cox and David Arquette. But, there's another legacy character who makes a surprise appearance in the film.
Barrera's character is revealed to be the offspring of Billy Loomis, one of the first Ghostface killers, who is played by Skeet Ulrich in the first Scream film. Throughout the film, Barrera's Sam is haunted by Loomis, who she sees reflected in mirrors, even though Loomis was killed by Campbell's Sidney at the end of the first film. However, Sam not only sees Loomis, but converses with him as he taunts her, which is also a cue that makes audiences suspect her as the killer.

Apparently, having Loomis return was a tricky thing to pull off, as Barrera reveals (via THR) it was a mixture of both VFX and live-action, as well as getting the original actor back for the part. Barrera explains that the reason Loomis is always seen in the mirror is because he's "part of herself" and that she shot all of those scenes by herself, acting against a tennis ball on a stand, with someone else reading Loomis' lines. However, Ulrich was brought back at the end of the shoot, with Barrera taking part. She explains, saying:
