Scream star Melissa Barrera has revealed that she was almost stabbed for real on set when shooting her encounter with Ghostface. The fifth entry in the meta-horror franchise has so-far enjoyed a strong financial and critical reception, with Scream being the first movie to knock Spider-Man: No Way Home off its pedestal as number 1 at the box office. Following a group of horror-fanatic teenagers who are pursued by a new killer donning the iconic spectral mask, the film introduces new characters to the series in addition to bringing back former protagonists from past Scream movies to face off against the hooded slasher once again.
Starring alongside Barrera,Scream's impressive cast also features Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jack Quaid, with Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Marley Shelton, and Neve Campbell reprising their roles from previous films. However, the road to Scream has been anything but an easy one. Following the death of Wes Craven in 2015, development on a fifth Scream remained in limbo for some time, as Craven was seen as integral to the franchise and its success. Uncertainty of the film's future was further exacerbated by the closing of The Weinstein Company in 2018, which had backed Scream 4 and were set to fund two more installments. But it was Spyglass Media Group who eventually came to the film's rescue when they acquired the rights to the franchise in November 2019, allowing production on Scream to finally move forward.
