As I take a break from writing this, I’m measuring the amount of space I have at my desk and considering whether I want to invest in an ultrawide monitor. But not just any ultrawide will do, no — I’m looking at the comically large 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 curved gaming monitor, which is currently on sale at Amazon for $992 (was $1,599). We’ve covered this monitor before, and while the price has fluctuated over time, it has rarely crossed below the $1,000 mark.

So why am I, personally, looking at this monitor? Well, I’ve had good experiences with Samsung monitors in the past, and a handful of Polygon staff own and enjoy Samsung TVs. But if I’m being honest, the appeal is in its absurdity: With a 32:9 aspect ratio and 5,120 x 1,440 resolution, it’s basically two quad HD monitors side-by-side — a fact that Samsung calls out — and it also has a Picture-By-Picture mode so you can use this as two distinct 16:9 monitors, each in a more reasonable 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. It’s so ultrawide that I have struggled to make a picture of it fit within the default aspect ratios of Polygon’s story editor. There may be portions of the image still cropped out! Trust me, reader — I tried.

Other key specs include a 240hz refresh rate, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort support, and a hefty stand to hold up 27.8 pounds of visual fidelity… but again, really, the big thing here is its size and sheer wide-ness.
What I’m trying to get at here is, if I’m tempted by this deal, then I think you might be, too — and for that, I’m sorry. Sort of sorry.
