In the past, computer storage called for a difficult choice: it could be ultra-fast or ultra-large, but not both. A traditional spinning HDD was always the way to go if you wanted something in the 4TB or larger spectrum. And if you could settle for smaller, then an SSD can net you blazing speeds. But now you can have the best of both worlds with Samsung's new 4TB 990 Pro SSD.
You can get the 4TB model with or without a heatsink, although you'll pay extra for the latter, naturally. Starting at $345 (and just $10 more for the heatsink), you'll get a very efficient PCIe 4.0 drive capable of read speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and write speeds of 6,900 MB/s, which matches the existing 1TB and 2TB models.
We went hands-on with the 2TB heatsink model and found it efficient and capable, though there are better options if you're a hard-core gamer. PCIe 5.0 drives are still faster, but they also typically cost more. The 990 Pro SSD is still an impressive bang for your buck and should be fast enough for more general case uses. That upgraded capacity even comes with a bonus: twice the cache size and double the endurance from the 2TB model, jumping from 1,200 TBW (terabytes written) to 2,400 TBW.
What sets this 4TB 990 Pro SSD apart from other similar offerings is its sheer physical size. Most 4TB SSDs like this place the NAND chips on both sides of the drive, creating a thicker piece of hardware that won't fit in thin systems like a laptop. The 4TB 990 Pro has the NAND chip on a single side, creating a much thinner drive you can use in a laptop.
Samsung will release the 990 PRO 4TB (MSRP: $344.99) and 990 PRO with Heatsink (MSRP: $354.99) on its site sometime in October, along with "other retailers." If 1TB or 2TB options will do the
