Since its premiere in 2009, RuPaul’s Drag Race fans have watched almost two hundred queens compete for the crown, but what viewers may not know is that drag is a family affair. Over the past fourteen seasons of Drag Race, many drag mothers and their daughters have sashayed down the runway.
There’s no college or official program that someone can enroll in to become a drag queen worthy of RuPaul's Drag Race. Oftentimes, an older and more experienced queen will mentor an emerging drag artist, teaching them everything, from makeup and padding tips to how to get booked for a gig. Drag mothers can have multiple daughters who then go on to have their own daughters, creating a drag family, otherwise known as a “Haus.”

Some family resemblances are uncanny, especially when the daughter adopts their mother’s last name, like Vanessa “Vanjie” Mateo and her mother, drag race fan-favorite Alexis Mateo. A Drag Race superfan could tell a queen is a daughter of Alyssa Edwards by their high-energy dance moves, pageant-like gratitude, and grandiose wigs. It’s clear that some drag daughters haven't fallen far from their family tree.
