Is it really that time of the year again already? It feels like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 just released, but we suppose Activision’s got to return to the well, as we doubt Crash Team Rumble’s going to top up its bank balance alone this year. So here we are, then, a report from reliable rumourmonger Tom Henderson: Sledgehammer Games is making Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Yes, you read that correctly: Modern Warfare 3.
For the longest time it was rumoured that the lucrative franchise would be taking a year off and would be offering “premium DLC” for Modern Warfare 2 in 2023. But Henderson claims, while those reports were accurate at one point in time, plans have since changed. He writes: “This year’s title is a fully-fledged sequel to Modern Warfare 2. Modern Warfare 3 will feature a campaign, multiplayer, zombies, and a new Warzone 2.0 map during the title’s first season.” What could possibly go wrong?
Apparently, the aforementioned Warzone 2.0 map will be inspired by Las Almas, which was previously discovered as an Easter egg within Modern Warfare 2’s campaign. Meanwhile, the zombies mode is currently named Outbreak 2.0, and could still potentially release separately as a free-to-play download – Activision is still weighing up all of its opportunities, apparently. Either way, the title’s allegedly due out on 10th November, with campaign early access unlocking a week earlier on 2nd November.
And by the way, Sony rather awkwardly still has marketing rights to the series, so it’ll have dibs on the game’s first beta weekend in October, regardless of whether Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition is completed by then.
