Roku and Walmart are teaming up to make it really easy to buy the products featured in ads with a few clicks of your Roku remote.
Roku already has a well-established ads system running on its streaming service, but now it's going to double as a shopping service. Specific ads will be interactive in so far as they will offer products you can purchase while the ad plays(Opens in a new window).
During these so-called "shoppable ads," a viewer can click "OK" on their Roku remote and have the product being advertised added to a Walmart cart.
Payment details will be grabbed automatically from the Roku Pay system (assuming you have it setup), and then Walmart will deliver the product to your door. An order confirmation email with shipping, return, and support information will also hit your inbox on order completion.
For now, Roku is running this as a pilot in the US and Walmart is the exclusive retailer. However, if it proves popular (and lucrative), we could see shoppable ads become the norm and many more retailers signing up. And who knows, in the near future tapping a few buttons on your Roku remote may be followed by a Walmart drone arriving a few hours later to drop off your order.
