The Godfather actor Robert Duvall reflects on his career after making the groundbreaking film. It's been 50 years since The Godfather first hit theatres, and it has since been widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. Helmed by Francis Ford Coppola and based upon the novel by Mario Puzo, The Godfather tells the story of an aging patriarch of an organized crime family, Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), in New York, who transfers power to his reluctant youngest son Michael (Al Pacino) in the middle of a gang war. Upon its release, The Godfather was acclaimed by both critics and audiences, and went on to be nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning three, including Best Picture.
Due to the film's massive success, The Godfather became a defining moment in the careers of nearly everyone who was a part of it. Despite the fact that it features actors who have had incredibly successful careers over the last several decades, their roles in The Godfather remain some of the most iconic characters of the cast's careers. When considering the filmographies of Brando, Pacino, Duvall, James Caan, Diane Keaton and other stars, while several films may spring to mind, one of them would most certainly be The Godfather.
