The Munsters being released in color would be a big mistake for the upcoming movie. Rob Zombie, who is directing the 2022 reboot of the 1960s CBS sitcom, has shown off a photo of its three stars in full-costume as the Munsters family. In contrast to most of the other images from the production, the photo contains bright colors and provides a sense of what can be expected from Zombie’s visual style.
Of course, the new Munsters image confirms nothing about Zombie’s plans, but it has given credence to the idea that the movie will be in color. While color may be standard for most movies and TV shows in the 21st century, the history of the Munsters franchise is enough to make a black-and-white release a real possibility for the reboot. After all, only the pilot episode of the original CBS series was shot in color. Every other episode in its two-season run, like many shows of its time, were filmed in black-and-white. Color was of course common in movies by the 1960s, but several TV shows still used black-and-white as a way of saving money.

The studio following through on Zombie’s color tease would be the wrong move for The Munsters. Most of the pictures that preceded the color image created high hopes for Zombie’s remake by capturing the overall aesthetic and visual style of the original show. What was shown of Herman, Lily, Grandpa, and the Mockingbird Lane mansion indicated that Zombie’s Munsters movie really was going for a nostalgic tone that’s accurate to the feel and the atmosphere of the iconic horror-comedy sitcom.
