Sony and Team Ninja have quietly released a Rise of the Ronin demo on PS5. If you’ve yet to play the open world samurai sim, you can head over to the PlayStation Store now to download the playable preview. This arrives alongside a new title update – version 1.07 – that includes fixes for a swathe of minor bugs.
Those who have been sitting on the fence will be able to play the game’s first chapter in full, the Rise of the Ronin demo having no time limit. Naturally, you’ll be able to carry over your save data should you pull the trigger and purchase a copy of the full game.
The latest PlayStation exclusive from Nioh and Ninja Gaiden studio, Team Ninja, Rise of the Ronin is an action RPG game set in Japan during the transformative Bakumatsu period. This era, spanning the late 19th century, marked the end of the Edo period and the coming of the Meiji Restoration, characterised rapid modernisation, clashing cultures, and the move away from long-held Japanese traditions.
Rise of the Ronin casts players as, well, a ronin: a samurai warrior with no master, free to roam Japan at a time of major political and social upheaval. On your historical quest, you will engage with various factions vying for power, including the Tokugawa shogunate and imperial loyalists.
One of the game’s highlights is its frenetic melee combat which expands over time as you level up and unlock a broad arsenal of weapons. Unlike previous Team Ninja titles, Rise of the Ronin features an immersive open world that can be explored on foot, horseback, or even airborne.
In our own review we scored it a stellar 9/10, Aran saying that “Rise of the Ronin is a massive gamble for Team Ninja, known for its more linear action games, but it’s one that has paid off. Rise of the Ronin has a lot of depth to it from the satisfying combat, to all the side activities across three broad regions, and the plethora of excellent characters. This game should mark the start of a grand new era for Team Ninja.”
