Earlier this year it was announced that fans would be making the trek back to the Caribbean with the release of the aptly titled Return to Monkey Island. While fans of the games are ecstatic at a new entry in the swashbuckling series, those hoping for a revival of it are in for some disappointment. Return to Monkey Island looks to be the last Threepwood adventure.
Earlier this week, Nintendo held a Direct Mini showcase to show off upcoming third-party games. During the event, Return to Monkey Island received quite a bit of attention. Kicking things off, fans got a glimpse at the excitement awaiting them in a new gameplay trailer. The trailer contained protagonist Guybrush Threepwood traveling underwater, embarking through caves, and, of course, exploring the island.

To go along with the game, the developers also unveiled a brand-new website for Monkey Island. This site includes several interactive options for fans to play with characters in the game and those creating it. However, delving further into the website will reveal some surprising information about the title. A small chunk of text reveals that Return to Monkey Island is the “exciting conclusion of the Monkey Island series”. It seems this is the last adventure to take place on the shores of the island.
This final entry finds Melee Island in a state of complete disarray. Captain Madison and a group of young pirate leaders have overthrown the old guard from power. With Guybrush Threepwood feeling unfulfilled for having never uncovered the Secret of Monkey Island, and the rest of the cast of characters all in different directions, this finale seems poised to set up a climactic
