HBO's Game of Thrones holds the unenviable title of having one of the worst endings to a major TV series, ever. While the series ended before George R.R. Martin could even finish The Winds of Winter, he did inform the producers how he intended to end it. However, it now seems Martin will not go down the same route, after the harsh reception the series received for its ending.
In a recent entry on his personal blog, Martin spoke about his writing process – actually he posted a video of him talking about it, but that's not the focus here. Further on in his post, he mentioned that he also gets asked if The Winds of Winter will have the same ending as Game of Thrones (thanks, GamesRadar).

"An architect would be able to give a short, concise, simple answer to that, but I am much more of a gardener," wrote Martin. "My stories grow and evolve and change as I write them. I generally know where I am going, sure… the final destinations, the big set pieces, they have been my head for years… for decades, in the case of A Song of Ice & Fire. There are lots of devils in the details, though, and sometimes the ground changes under my feet as the words pour forth."
He went on to say that he doesn't like giving major updates on the book because, as we know, Martin loves to throw in surprising and heartbreaking twists. He went on to say that merely mentioning that he's working on a chapter about Tyrion reveals that the character is alive, and spoils a bit of the anticipation.
