The release of watchOS 8.5 appears to have broken fast charging on the latest Apple Watch.
9to5Mac reports that Apple Watch Series 7 owners have experienced problems with their smartwatch's fast-charging capabilities since Apple released watchOS 8.5 last week.
Faster charging is one of the Apple Watch Series 7's main advantages over its predecessors—the device charges roughly 33% faster than the Series 6 it so closely resembles in other ways.
9to5Mac cites several complaints on Apple's support forums and Reddit, as well as personal experience. "While at first it appeared this issue was only affecting users with the Apple Series 7 and the Belkin BoostCharge Pro," 9to5Mac says, "it actually seems to affect all fast charging users. This includes those using Apple’s own USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable."
So far there doesn't seem to be a way to mitigate this problem short of refraining from installing watchOS 8.5 on an Apple Watch Series 7 until Apple releases a version without this issue.
Apple doesn't appear to have acknowledged this problem on its support website. The company didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about these fast-charging issues.
