Disney+ has officially decided not to renew its latest fantasy adventure period drama for a second season.
This cancellation comes after over four months since the Louisa Harland-led series debuted its 8-episode first season. Set in 18th century England, the story centered around the titular quick-witted outlaw, who gained powers meeting a magical spirit. Despite its cancellation, the series has received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 31 reviews.
“Disney+ Original series, Renegade Nell, will not be returning for a second season on the service. We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor,” a Disney representative said in a statement (via Deadline). “We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast – led by Louisa Harland – and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.”
The Renegade Nell series was written and created by Gentleman Jack’s Sally Wainwright, with Ben Taylor (Sex Education, Catastrophe), Amanda Brotchie (Gentleman Jack), and MJ Delaney (Ted Lasso) serving as directors. The cast included Frank Dillane as Nell’s fickle friend and sometime adversary Charles Devereux; Alice Kremelberg as Sofia Wilmot, a young widow who wants power and independence at any cost; Adrian Lester as the Earl of Poynton, a master political schemer and manipulator; Joely Richardson as eccentric newspaper magnate Lady Eularia Moggerhanger; Pip Torrens as Lord Blancheford; Jake Dunn as Thomas; Ényì Okoronkwo as Rasselas; Bo Bragason and Florence Keen as Nell’s two younger sisters Roxy and George; and Craig Parkinson as Nell’s kind-hearted father, Sam.
