ThePunisher’s new role as leader of the Hand looks to have lasting repercussions for the character, but it also provides Marvel with the perfect opportunity for Frank Castle to butt heads with Wolverine, who was once brainwashed by the ninja clan to fight his fellow heroes and turn them all into high-powered assassins.
Frank Castle and Logan go together perfectly, though their relationship hasn't always been smooth. Both made their respective debuts in the 1970s, and the take-no-prisoners attitude of both characters makes them ideal for team-ups, crossovers and good old-fashioned superhero brawls. More recently, the Punisher has gone through some fairly significant changes. The ancient ninja clan the Hand is known for killing and resurrecting their members, which is exactly what happens when they resurrect Frank Castle’s deceased wife Maria in exchange for him being their new leader. As a result, the Punisher has changed up his controversial skull-face logo and traded in his guns for a pair of swords, and used his new army of ninja in his ongoing war on crime. Castle’s ultimate motives for leading the Hand are still vague, but his new position could make for an interesting confrontation with Wolverine, who has some unfinished business with the Hand from the time he was killed and resurrected to become their unwitting assassin.
