Magic: The Gathering is big business and the game draws in collectors and players from around the world. The vividness and uniqueness of the art, the lore and stories the game can encompass, is what makes MTG so appealing while the value of the cards casts a green sheen over the hobby. But the monetary association can also attract charlatans, confidence tricksters, rogues, crooks, rascals, and scammers.
Over on the MTG subreddit, there is intrigue afoot as a post was made by a private investigator looking to hunt down a scammer. This private dick is after help and has sought the aid of the Magic community. The PI is based out of Washington state, USA, and is trying to track down an individual who has scammed members of the MTG community for more than $100,000.

This is a licensed private investigator who sought special permission from the moderators to make their posting. They're helping an attorney to find the scammer, and they've tracked down an additional pair of victims recently. "Each was scammed out of money and/or MTG cards by the same person", the post reads. "I am told this person was very well-respected in the high-end card community, at least until recently".
It seems this scammer could be well known as the OP shares only their initials (to avoid breaking Reddit rules over doxing). The scammer is initialled J.C. "If you are someone who deals with high-end cards, and were scammed by this person, I imagine that is enough information to recognise who I am talking about".
